Meet the winners of Enterprize Challenge 2025!

May 12, 2025/in News

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre buzzed with entrepreneurial energy on Thursday, May 8th, 2025, as Community Futures North Okanagan hosted its 10th annual Enterprize Challenge. Over 200 attendees gathered to witness the culmination of months of hard work and dedication from local aspiring business owners. The evening was a resounding success, showcasing the ingenuity and passion driving the region’s future economy.

The air crackled with anticipation as the finalists presented their innovative business ventures to a panel of esteemed judges and the enthusiastic audience. Ultimately, three exceptional entrepreneurs rose to the top:

Taking home the coveted 1st place prize was Dora Anderson with Ecotecture. Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable building practices, Dora and her team are poised to revolutionize construction in Vernon. Their vision focuses on developing new, eco-friendly building specifications based on green building standards, paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future for the region.

Securing the 2nd place prize was Kylee Howard with Vicky’s Play Place. Kylee’s heartfelt vision addresses a crucial need in the North Okanagan for a dedicated play and family connection hub. Vicky’s Play Place promises to be a vibrant space featuring a multi-level play structure for children and a specialized toddler zone, fostering imaginative play and strengthening community bonds for families.

The 3rd place prize was awarded to Shelley Lavigne of North Okanagan Consulting. Shelley’s expertise provides invaluable support to both contractors and homeowners navigating the often-complex world of construction permits. By guiding her clients through the intricacies of the permitting process, Shelley frees up valuable time for contractors and empowers homeowners to undertake their projects with confidence.

Adding to the excitement of the evening, the People’s Choice Award, as voted on by the enthusiastic audience, also went to Kylee Howard and Vicky’s Play Place! This double win is a testament to the strong community support and excitement surrounding her vision for a dedicated family space.

The 10th annual Enterprize Challenge was a powerful reminder of the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit thriving in the North Okanagan. Community Futures North Okanagan continues to play a vital role in fostering this growth, providing crucial support and mentorship to these promising ventures.

Congratulations to Dora, Kylee, Shelley, and Kaitlyne & Amber who poured their hearts and souls into this year’s challenge. The future of business in the North Okanagan looks bright!

Community Futures Launches Rural Community Immigration Pilot to Address Workforce Challenges

May 5, 2025/in News

Working with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Community Futures North Okanagan and Community Futures Shuswap is pleased to announce the launch of the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) in the North Okanagan/Shuswap region. This initiative aims to support economic development by strengthening the region’s capacity to attract, integrate, and retain a skilled workforce. RCIP will play a vital role in addressing persistent and emerging labour market needs and assist with tackling demographic challenges in our communities.

The pilot program focuses on attracting foreign workers to fill jobs in five broad categories crucial to the local economy:

  • Health
  • Education, law and social, community and government services
  • Sales and service
  • Trades and transport
  • Manufacturing

The first intake window for prospective candidates will be from May 12 to May 26, 2025. A comprehensive schedule outlining the full application process and timelines is available on the RCIP program website https://rcipnorthokanaganshuswap.com/

Local employers will play a central role in the RCIP program. To participate, employers must become designated and participate in mandatory training to become approved. Once designated, they will be eligible to apply on behalf of qualified employees or candidates.

“This pilot represents a significant opportunity to address the critical labour shortages facing our region,” says Leigha Horsfield, Executive Director of Community Futures North Okanagan. “By attracting skilled workers and supporting their integration into our communities, we can address critical labour shortages and grow the workforce in the North Okanagan/Shuswap.”

Community Futures encourages local employers to visit their website for detailed information about RCIP, including eligibility criteria, and application processes: https://rcipnorthokanaganshuswap.com/

Enterprize Challenge: A Decade of Fueling Entrepreneurial Dreams

May 5, 2025/in News

Ten years ago, in 2015, the seeds of the Enterprize Challenge were sown.

Blossoming from a successful experience with a Youth Dragon’s Den program, Leigha Horsfield, Executive Director of Community Futures North Okanagan, recognized something was missing in the local entrepreneurial landscape. Aspiring business owners possessed innovative ideas but often lacked the guidance and support to transform those concepts into viable business plans and ultimately, thriving enterprises.

Stepping up to fill this vital gap in the North Okanagan, the Enterprize Challenge was born.

Leigha Horsfield remembers the initial uncertainty, wondering if there would be enough interest and even considering it might be a one-time event.

VantageOne Credit Union was among the first to champion this vision, becoming one the inaugural sponsors. Amy Gilles, Commercial Services Account Manager with VantageOne, fondly recalls those early days. Being a first-time mentor was a slightly “terrifying” experience for Amy, building up her mentorship experience while also helping those first Enterprize Challenge participants. Amy now mentors other VantageOne staff as Enterprize Challenge mentors, helping grow and support the program further. Amy’s favourite part of her experience with Enterprize Challenge is “people that I’ve mentored, I have truly become friends with.”

Among the first entrepreneurs to apply for Enterprize Challenge in 2015, there was:

  • Amy Kermociev, Orchard Green Farms
  • Bernie & Maylene Ramis, Rollin’ Spring Rolls
  • Marc Pilon, Trinity Valley Hops
  • Mark Kemper, Kemper & Sons Artisan Millwork
  • Nancy Wilde, JuiceBox Tool Box

The early commitment from sponsors like VantageOne Credit Union, the City of Vernon, Sun FM Radio Station, Nixon Wenger, KPMG, the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce, Real Focus Business Consulting, and Sproing Creative in 2015 clearly demonstrated the strong belief in the Enterprize Challenge’s potential within the local business community.

Mitchal Derksen, a CPA and founder of Agile BK (an Vernon-based, AI-powered bookkeeping company), is a testament to this. In 2018, Mitchal had just moved back to Vernon and was starting his business. Recognizing that the Okanagan business scene thrives on connections, Mitchal joined the Enterprize Challenge primarily to build a local network.

Reflecting on his pitching experience, Mitchal, a self-described “fairly comfortable public speaker” and “pretty good storyteller,” admitted, “I was caught off by the nerves that I felt when I was presenting… I remember getting up in front of judges and just butterflies.”

Overcoming his nerves, Mitchal found Enterprize Challenge was a great way to meet new people and receive valuable mentorship as a new entrepreneur, especially since his background is not in marketing. His positive experience led him to return as a mentor for three consecutive years, from 2019 to 2021, sharing his insights with new cohorts of entrepreneurs. Now a judge, Mitchal gets excited watching the Challengers’ pitches and has a lot of empathy for the presenters.

“It’s like drinking from a fire hose,” recounts Mitchal of his recent experiences as an Enterprize Challenge judge. “People with great business ideas [are] trying to tell you as much as they can in the short period of time they have.”

Now, in 2025, the story has come full circle. Agile BK has stepped up as the title sponsor for the Enterprize Challenge out of a desire to reinvest back into the program and the entrepreneurs driving new growth in our region, a powerful demonstration of the program’s lasting influence and the success stories it has helped to create. This milestone not only celebrates a decade of empowering local entrepreneurs but also underscores the enduring spirit of collaboration and growth that defines the Enterprize Challenge.

For participants, the Enterprize Challenge journey culminates in a final pitch event that has grown in stature over the years. In 2015, the first pitches took place within the familiar walls of the Community Futures North Okanagan offices in downtown Vernon. After these initial pitches, the judges chose a winner and the awards ceremony was planned for a separate date – and location.

The Vernon Recreation Centre provided the perfect spot for both the tradeshow element – Enterprize Challenge participants were given booth space to market their products and services – as well as a stage for the 2015 Awards Ceremony. The general public visiting the tradeshow, excited by the entrepreneurs and their new businesses, didn’t get a chance to see the actual pitches. After all the effort put into their pitches, the Enterprize Challenge results were revealed with the opening of a special sealed envelope at the awards event. In 2025, the Challengers now command a much larger stage, captivating audiences with their compelling pitches on-stage at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre.

And the winner of Enterprize Challenge in 2015? Well that would be Bernie & Maylene Ramis of Rollin’ Spring Rolls!

The public is welcome to join Community Futures North Okanagan for the 10th annual Enterprize Challenge presented by Agile BK. The event will take place on Thursday, May 8th, 2025 at the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre. Tickets are complimentary but pre-registration is required. Don’t miss this exciting milestone event!
